Understanding FP&A and Predictive Models
FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis) includes financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis. Discover how predictive models can transform your financial management.

FP&A (Financial Planning & Analysis) includes financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, reporting, analysis, and financial consolidation. FP&A can be used for different scenarios, such as planning, budgeting and forecasting, reporting and analysis, financial consolidation, ad-hoc reports, and zero-based budgeting. It also involves an analysis of the actual situation and a comparison with the target situation, which leads to financial forecasting or even simulations. Beyond generative artificial intelligence (ChatGPT and others) which is currently dominating the debate, statistics and artificial intelligence can give us a hand in our estimations. An example of predictive models in the context of FP&A Suppose we are in a retail company or a consumer goods manufacturer. FP&A could assist us with predictive models to anticipate future sales. But how could this work? Historical data analysis : We collect past sales data, such as monthly sales of specific products, seasonal trends, and certain external or internal factors (such as holidays and days off, the number of working days, the position of Saturdays, staff presence, closing days, etc.). Modeling : We use statistical methods, such as linear regression or time series, activity driver detection to create a predictive model. This model will detect and take into account relevant variables (e.g., time of year, promotions, etc.) and predict future sales. This model can be intrinsically enriched by artificial intelligence or statistics to fill data gaps and quickly adapt to a changing context. Short-term forecasts : Based on the model, we can generate short-term forecasts (e.g., for next month). This helps the company plan its inventory, allocate resources, and adjust marketing strategies. Long-term forecasts : Using more sophisticated models, we can also make longer-term forecasts (e.g., for the coming year or a 3-year plan). This helps the company develop budget plans, business plans, and make strategic decisions. In short, predictive models enable the company to anticipate future trends, optimize its operations, and streamline decision-making. These are powerful tools for FP&A! Advantages of predictive modeling in FP&A Predictive modeling offers several advantages in the field of FP&A : Anticipation of future trends : Predictive models make it possible to anticipate future developments. They help companies prepare accordingly, adjust their strategies, and make informed decisions. Resource optimization : By anticipating future needs, companies can allocate their resources more efficiently. For example, in the case of sales, they can adjust their inventory, staffing, and marketing budgets. Risk reduction : Predictive forecasting helps identify potential risks and adopt preventive measures. This may include crisis scenarios, economic fluctuations, or changes in the business environment. Improved budget planning : By using predictive models, companies can develop more accurate budgets. This facilitates financial management and strategic decision-making. Responsiveness to changes : Predictive modeling allows companies to adapt quickly to market developments. They can adjust their plans based on new information and emerging trends. Of course, predictive modeling won't help you predict extreme cases – a pandemic, a war, an energy crisis, or other exceptional effects – but it will allow you to adapt quickly, reassure you in your assumptions, help you rationalize your arguments, and provide something achievable at the time of the events, which will help you motivate your team and set or revise objectives. In short, predictive modeling is a powerful tool for optimizing operations, reducing uncertainties, and improving company performance.
